May 20, 2019 I don't think you can open an IFC file unless you have a drawing open. While inside a new blank drawing, use ifcimport. If you love the ribbon, use the application menu while in a drawing and in the search bar, type ifc. Choose import. You must be in a drawing. Architect, Registered NC, VA, SC, & GA.

11.3 BIM Exports
If you need to transfer a drawing into another BIM system such a Navisworks or Infraworks, then exports are provided in various file formats on the 'Keysoft BIM 3D' tab. These exports will export 2D and 3D objects in the drawing and also include the data/attributes that have been added. The exports will create a file that can then be opened in a format more suitable for whichever BIM system is required, the various formats are described below.
NoteThe exports will only export Keysoft objects and WILL NOT include any AutoCAD or ground modelling information
11.3.1 Export to BIM
Writes out the Keysoft geometry and specification data only to a drawing (*.dwg) file where the objects have been converted to blocks where the added information and bim data is attached as AutoCAD attributes. This allows you to issue the drawing so it can be shared with standard AutoCAD users and used in collaboration software, such as Autodesk Navisworks or Autodesk Infraworks.
- Go to Keysoft BIM 3D>BIM>Export to BIM (or type EXPORTTOBIM)
- You will be prompted to Select objects:
- Select the Keysoft objects you wish to export (there is an 'All' option to quickly select all the Keysoft objects)
- Press return to accept these
- Navigate to where you wish to save the file
- Enter a file name and pick [Save] to save the file in the location with the specified file name
- The exported *.dwg file can be shared with AutoCAD users or other software that supports the *.dwg file type
11.3.2 Export to IFC
This provides the ability to write out the Keysoft geometry and attributes data to an Industry Foundation Classes (*.ifc) file that can be imported into most BIM-enabled software. The export supports both v2x3 and v4 formats. The 2D and 3D geometry and vertical position of objects will be retained in the export along with the associated specification data. IFC is generally regarded as the most commonly available exchange format. It does not currently include definitions for all object types, such as landscape and ground models, but provides general headings that can be used when sharing data.
- Go to Keysoft BIM 3D>BIM>Export to IFC. (or type EXPORTTOIFC)
- You will be prompted to Select objects:
- Select the Keysoft objects you wish to export (there is an 'All' option to quickly select all the Keysoft objects)
- Press return to accept these
- The Export to IFC dialog appears
- Enter a Project Name, if required. This will act as a reference for data set that is exported
- Select the *.ifc export format required
- Pick OK
- Navigate to where you wish to save the file
- Enter a file name and pick [Save] to save the file in the location with the specified file name
- The exported *.ifc file can be shared with other software that can import this file type
NoteBIMVision is a freely available desktop application that allows you to open and check your export file before sharing it with others.
11.3.3 Export to SHP
This provides the ability to write out the Keysoft geometry and specification data only to an ESRI Shapefile (*.shp) file to be shared with spatial (GIS) databases. The export creates a shape file for each object type (Markings, bollards, etc.) along with the necessary support files (*.shx and *.dbf). These will allow you to recreate the geometry and associated specification data in GIS system. Please note that whilst the objects elevation will be retained, any 3D geometry will be flattened to a 2D representation.
- Go to Keysoft BIM 3D>BIM>Export to SHP. (or type EXPORTTOSHP)
- You will be prompted to Select objects:
- Select the Keysoft objects you wish to export (there is an 'All' option to quickly export all the Keysoft objects)
- Press return to accept these
- Navigate to where you wish to save the file
- Select the folder and pick [Select Folder]
NoteThe Shapefile export will create a large number of individual files in the target folder. It is recommended that you select, or create, an empty folder before saving the files to make it easier to use later.
- The SHP Export Settings dialog will appear
NoteShapefile headers have a 10 character limit. Several Keysoft field names will be longer than this limit and will be truncated. The Original Header (left-hand) window shows the current name of the field in Keysoft. The Short Header (right-hand) window shows the truncated field name that will be defined in the export and allows you to edit the field name.
- If you wish to edit the field name when exported, under the Short Header (right-hand) window select the field and over type with the field name required, up to a maximum of 10 characters
- If you wish to save the settings for use on future exports, pick [Export] and save the SHP Template File (*.shptemplate) with an appropriate name and to a defined location. Use [Import] to use this settings file for future exports from this and other project drawings
- Share the folder and the whole of its contents with others who can import Shapefiles into their application
NoteQGIS is a freely available desktop application that allows you to open and check your shp export files before sharing it with others.
11.3.4 Export to CSV
Writes out the Keysoft data only to a comma separated value (*.csv) file that can be opened in any spreadsheet or database software, such as MS Excel or MS Access, that can be included within a COBie database. This file does not include any geometry information.
- Go to Keysoft BIM 3D>BIM>Export to CSV. (or type EXPORTTOCSV)
- The exported *.csv file can be opened in a spreadsheet application, such as MS Excel
